SwimmingOne of the primary purposes of our Club is the teaching of swimming. Anyone wanting to learn to swim or improve their existing ability can come along and join in our teaching group sessions which takes place on Monday evenings between 6.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m. at Polkyth.
We have 5 teaching groups, starting with absolute beginners in group 1, leading up through the groups to number 5 where swimmers can competently do the three main strokes of front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke. Group 5 swimmers then go on into our Squad sessions where they can train for competitive swimming or do Synchro or Water Polo.
Group 1 teaches the basics of flotation and streamlining and gives a new swimmer confidence in the water. They then move on to group 2 where the basic shapes of the three main strokes are taught. As their ability improves they are continuously assessed and moved up to the next group until, by the time they finish in group 4 they are competent at all three strokes. They then move into group 5 where we start to build up stamina, ready to take on the increased workloads demanded by competitive and synchronised swimming.
Membership of the Club is open to anyone who wishes to learn or improve their swimming. Age is not normally a limiting factor, however the vast bulk of learners are aged from 5 to 12 years. A short assessment of the candidate's ability is carried out and this tells us which teaching group they are to start in. These assessments take place at 6pm on a Monday night. Anyone interested is invited to come along at this time.
Each group is lead by a qualified swimming teacher and it is the policy of the Club to continuously develop their teaching skills so that best practice is always being taught to the swimmers.
Once a swimmer has progressed up through these groups, they will then be invited to join the junior training. This gives them some more training time and is the next step towards being a squad swimmer - these are the better swimmers, who become our competitive swimmers
We also cater for the fitness swimmers, who want a certain level of training, but do not want to compete
