Latest News County Champs - Long Distance weekend (February 05, 2012)
Sessions 1 & 2 of the CCASA County Championships were held over the weekend of 4th/5th February 2012 at Bodmin Dragons. This is classed as the "Long Distance" weekend with the girls and boys 800m and 1500m Freestyle as well as the 4x200m Freestyle relays.
Saturday saw four of our swimmers competing - Holly amd Maisie took on the 800m for the first time with Kay, and Finn competed in the 1500m (for the 1st time in a short course pool)
Holly and Maisie were both in heat two. Maisie took the challenge and swam with real determination to finish in a time of 11.26.56 (taking a full minute off her PB) . Holly also battled through the distance, finishing in a time of 11.40.07, which bettered her PB by 19 secs. Holly was delighted to achieve a bronze medal in her age group, with this result.
Kay led the way in the fastest heat. She gradually put the pressure on her main competitor and pulled away strongly, finishing in a time of 9.16.89. (A PB by 6 seconds) This made her the Senior Champion with a new Senior Championship record as well as a new Competition Best time for 17 yr olds. It also qualifies her for the Regional Youth Championships.
Finn then took on the short course 1500m. He did as he was told by coach Pete and gradually pulled away from his main competitors, swimming evenly to a winning time of 17.07.08.(His previous PB was a long course time of 18.00.27) This made him the Junior Champion and also gave him a qualifying time for the Regional Youth Championships.
Sunday started with the 4x200m Freestyle relay events. Unfortunately because of the way the age groups work, we were only able to field one team - the girls 13yrs and under. Gracie, Anna, Rebecca and Katie made up the team and they all swam strongly , achieving either PB's or very close to PB's.
Finn then kicked off the individual events with the 800m Freestyle. He had already achieved a PB in the first 800 of the 1500m the day before with a time of 9.06, but after a fairly easy start he turned up the power and finished in a time of 8.56.72 which gave him a Competition Best time for his age group and the Junior Champion award.
Maisie, Holly and Kay returned to compete in the 1500m Freestyle. Maisie and Holly swam in the first heat. Holly was struggling with a chest condition but bravely gave it her best, finishing in a time of 22.38.92 which bettered her PB and gave her a bronze medal. Maisie swam her heart out and had a private battle with another 11yr old for the third place. She took two minutes off her PB with a time of 21.29.85, but was so narrowly pipped to the bronze medal.
Kay dominated the final heat and lapped on an even pacing to finish in a time of 17.47.19, her first time under 18 minutes and a massive PB. This gave her a Competition Best time for her age group, and a Senior Championship record.
Very good swimming by all concerned this weekend, and Coach, Pete Long left with a smile on his face!
